Football: Returning talent offers bounce-back hopes for BG in Vlk's debut season

The Daily Herald, August 19, 2016
There will be a couple of new looks for Buffalo Grove this year. Jeff Vlk will be taking over as head coach following Mike DiMatteo, who retired after last season. And the Bison will have a new quarterback after three-year starter Trey Cervantes graduated. Vlk has yet to settle on his new signal caller. Vlk, who has been at Buffalo Grove for 10 years and the defensive coordinator under the last two head coaches, is excited to be on the job.  Read Story

Staff Spotlight

1. What is your name? Tom Foster

2. What department do you teach in/ what courses do you teach?  I teach in the English department.

3. How long have you been working at BG?  This is my first year at Buffalo Grove and sixth year overall.

4. Where did you go to high school?  I attended Elk Grove High School.

5. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding?  The reciprocal motivation that happens between student and teacher makes my job the most rewarding. People often ask me how I can be around teenagers all day, and what I've come to realize is that teenagers are easier to be around than most people: they have not yet become jaded by the world, they still are full of belief and a yearning to understand, and they are on the horizon of comprehending who they will become. High school is a very exciting time in everyone's life, and I get relive and witness the transitions and evolutions on a daily basis. I am most rewarded during two phases of this journey: 1) when I help motivate or enlighten a student during their high school experience, and 2) when the students help motivate me through their success and growth.

6. What is something unique about you?  What makes me unique and has really helped create empathy in my classroom is that I am a former special education student. I understand the stigma that comes with that label, and at the same time, I fully understand the supports that are in place to help students grow. As a graduate of Elk Grove High School, I owe everything to the teachers, especially the special education teachers, that fostered my growth and believed in my potential. Now, as an employee of district 214, it is my duty to pay forward the dedication and commitment my district 214 teachers provided to me.

7.What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?  This year, I will be coaching the speech team.
