Staff Spotlight on Anya Belan

What is your name? My name is Anya Belan.

What department do you teach in? How long have you been teaching at BG? I am a Social Worker in the Student Services department. This is my first year at Buffalo Grove as a full time employee. However, I worked here last year as a social work intern.

Where did you go to high school/ college? I graduated from Stevenson High School. I stayed local for college, received my bachelors degree from DePaul University and my master degree from Loyola University.

What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? Working with teenagers is a privilege. Making human connections with students is what I find most rewarding through developing trust and broadening their support system.

What’s a bucket list item for you? Since I was a little girl, I would sneak stray dogs into our apartment building in the winter and would go out of my way to keep them warm and fed. Recently I have connected with Reach Rescue and have been fostering dogs until they find their forever families. One of my bucket list items is to foster 100 dogs.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? I am currently reading “Pineapple Street” by Jenny Jackson. One of my favorite podcasts is “A Bit of Optimism” with Simon Sinek. This podcast inspires me to be my best self, to care about people around me, and to embrace life with positivity or as Simon Sinek would say “…something I think we need these days… A Bit of Optimism.”

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? I am in the process of finding something that will be a good fit for me. I am passionate about volunteering and hope to share that passion with our students.

What is something unique about you? When I was little, my family immigrated to this country from Ukraine which was a rough transition at the time. I now see my unique upbringing and world view as an important part of my experience which helps me relate to our growing EL student population.

Bison in the News

Girls volleyball: Scouting Cook and Lake County

The Daily Herald, August 23, 2023

Worth noting: The Bison have many new faces this season, welcoming back a strong core of leadership from last year's team. Halter will be returning for her third varsity season. As an MSL All-Conference selection last year, she helped lead the Bison to tremendous growth. Also back are Coglianese Damm, Patil, Sirbu and Son, who all stepped into pivotal roles on the court last year. "They will once again be called upon to help lead our team," Priban said. "Our new additions have really adjusted well to the speed of the game and have continuously pushed us to improve. Read Story
