Friday Focus:  BG Celebrates Annual Salute to Staff

This week we had the pleasure of celebrating the years of service and achievements of the dedicated teachers, ESP, maintenance and food service staff of Buffalo Grove HIgh School at our annual Salute to Staff. Congratulations to the recipients of the 2023 Outstanding Contributions to Education awards: Tom Cooney, David Garst, Jeff Grybash, Barbara Meyer, Marlyn Rodriguez, Francesa Murphy, Michelle Price, Sue Marvin, Kristin Oversmith, Karen Roberts, Colleen Murtagh, Manny Aguirre-Garcia, Soraida Caldera, Jose Jimenez, Lily Justiniano and Jim Kepp. The following staff members also received special recognition of the significant local, state or national awards they received during the school year: Kate Goebel, Amy Zaba, Mike Garofola and Lea Ann Pitcher. 


The Bison Impact: 

  • Congratulations to Buffalo Grove Junior Rohan Ganeshan on being named to First Team All-State for Illinois Scholastic Bowl by the IHSSBCA for the 2nd year in a row!

  • Congratulations to the BGHS ACES (Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science) team on advancing to the State Finals! This is the second consecutive year, and the third time in the past 20 years. The State Finals will be held at Eastern Illinois University on Wednesday, April 17th. Congratulations to Rohan Ganeshan (Chem, Bio), Nick Fedchuck (Chem, English), Anthony Safonov (Chem, Math), Priya Adiga (Math, Physics), Artur Mullagaliyev (Math, Computer Science), Ashlin Monish (Bio, English), Kayle Tse (Bio, English), Arpoorv Sagar Pitta (Computer Science, Physics), Lucas Pasdo (Physics, Math), Dominick Berrios (Physics , Math), Nikolay Sitnikov (Computer Science, Math), Krystle Bernales (Bio) and Carina Obrecht (English, Math)!

  • Congratulations to Mario Torres, the 3200m indoor Track & Field conference champion!

  • Shout out to the Boys and Girls Water Polo teams volunteering at Feed My Starving Children last week!

  • Congratulations to Softball’s Kate Ryan on throwing a no-hitter in the season opening 6-0 shutout at Dundee-Crown last week! The senior left-hander, who faced 23 batters, struck out seven and did not walk a single batter!

  • Huge shout out to our Blue Crew President and Captain of the Boys Lacrosse Team, Michael Cervantes! Michael scored a school record 7 goals in a BG 13-9 victory over Wauconda this week! We are so proud of you and the team for picking up their first win of the season! GO BISON!

BGPA Scholarship Application Deadline is April 4th

The Buffalo Grove High School Parent Association (“BGPA”) and donor Mrs. Jackie Sell are pleased to award scholarships to recognize the achievement of our students. The winners will be selected based on school and community involvement, leadership, motivation, and academics, as well as a compelling personal essay. All graduating BGHS Class of 2023 seniors are eligible for this scholarship. Additionally, scholarship Applicants must plan to attend a post-secondary or technical school as a full-time or part-time student and must meet District 214’s requirements to participate in and to be awarded a diploma at commencement in 2022. The Scholarship is an outright gift and will be announced and disbursed at the Principal's Awards Night on May 17, 2023.


All applications will be reviewed with complete anonymity. The completed application (with required signatures) must be received in the BGHS College/Career Center by the end of school on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. All decisions made by BGPA will be final. Donation Drive for Victims of Palatine Fire

The Palatine High School community was impacted by a fire in the Windhaven Condominiums on Sunday night. There are many families, some of whom attend Palatine High School, who have been displaced from their homes. Partners For Our Communities (POC) has coordinated a Donation Drive to help the victims of this tragedy. The following items have been requested at this time: 

  • Clothes and Shoes

  • NEW Underwear and Socks

  • Personal and Feminine Hygiene Products

  • Food Gift Cards

  • Snacks and Water


If you have any of these items, students can bring them to the main office at Palatine High School. Items can also be dropped off at the following locations: 

  • Community Resource Center (1585 N. Rand Rd. Palatine)

  • District 15 Main Office (580 N 1st Bank Rd., Palatine)

  • Stuart R. Paddock Elementary School (225 W. Washington St., Palatine)

  • Winston Campus Junior High School (120 N. Babcock Dr., Palatine)


There will also be a donation drive-thru at Christ Lutheran Church at 41 S. Rohlwing Road in Palatine on Monday, March 27, and Tuesday, March 28 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. The items collected will be brought to the POC for distribution to the families.

NHS to Host Dog Walk-a-Thon

The BGHS National Honor Society will host its very first Dog Walk-a-Thon on Sunday, April 3rd. All proceeds and donations will go directly to Reach Rescue of Mundelein. More information will be coming out after Spring Break regarding sign-up, but until then we are looking for old blankets, sheets, t-shirts, etc. for making toys for our furry legged participants. Over break, please think of us as you do your spring cleaning and put anything aside that may help. Beginning Monday, April 3rd, large bins for community member donations will be located at Door 1 at BGHS. Thank you for any and all donations! Summer School Information

D214 has a new summer school program, the D214 Summer Experience. Registration for Summer Experience 2023 began on Wednesday, March 1st. A how-to video has been created to help families navigate the registration system.  WATCH IT HERE. To register, you will need your student’s D214 student ID number, student’s date of birth, household zip code, and the student’s school. The registration system is mobile-friendly, so you can register anywhere with any device. Please check your email for detailed information from the D214 Academic Programs & Pathways Team that will answer many questions you might have. An early bird discount is available through April 15th.

Buffalo Grove pitcher Kate Ryan hurls a pitch toward home plate in 2022. Buffalo Grove softball may have a new head coach in Martha Kelly, but the pitching from last year’s ace Kate Ryan remains the same. That is not a good thing for opponents as Dundee-Crown found out in the season opener Thursday, March 16 in a 6-0 win for Buffalo Grove as Ryan threw a no-hitter. Read Story
