 Friday Focus:

NJROTC Students Shine in Regional Tournament

Buffalo Grove High School would like to recognize our Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) students. On February 5, 2022, NJROTC hosted a regional tournament with 16 area high schools attending. Students from throughout District 214, including Buffalo Grove High School, participate in the NJROTC program. Our team won a number of awards, including a 1st place award in Academics! Earlier this school year the NJROTC Varsity and JV orienteering teams traveled to Ohio and placed 2nd in that regional competition. NJROTC students have also won awards in marksmanship, drill, physical training and academic competitions this year. These outstanding students have also made time to volunteer at nearly 10 community service events so far during this school year, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? Francisco Plazola Jr.

What department have you/ do you work in? I currently work in the English/EL department as an Instructional Assistant.

How long have you been working at BG? I started working at BG at the end of September of 2021.

Where did you go to high school? I graduated from Wheeling High School in 2018, go Wildcats!

What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? As an Instructional Assistant, I support EL students in various classes. This allows me to work with the same students throughout the day in different classes and environments. I enjoy the ability of not being limited to one subject, rather supporting a variety of classes such as World Lit, Multicultural Lit, ESL 2, Biology, and Geometry. My schedule also gives me the opportunity to work alongside a wonderful group of teachers from various backgrounds and departments here at BGHS. I think the most rewarding part of being here is the opportunity to work with students, give them advice and support when needed, and to be able to watch them grow as learners and individuals and in the end, celebrating their wins.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? I am currently reading the Spanish version of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sánchez. My favorite author is Reyna Grande. My favorite book by her is La Distancia Entre Nosotros or The Distance Between Us

What is something unique about you? I started working for District 214 my junior year of high school as a Preschool Aide in WHS’s Little Wildcats Daycare. At the age of 20, I returned to the district in October of 2020 as an Instructional Assistant at Newcomer Center, then in March of 2021 I transferred over to work at The Academy at Forest View as an Instructional Assistant, then came over to BG. Some say that I am very young to have started working in those roles, I call it a reward of my grit, hard work, and dedication, as well as my previous work experience, all things I learned from my parents.

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?  What activities at BG do you follow? I currently co-sponsor the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), our door is always open for new members! Feel free to contact myself or Ms. Lobato for more information.

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? My name is Amy Rubio.

What department have you/ do you work in? I currently work in the ground’s department. I was a third shift custodian for Buffalo grove before that.

How long have you been working at BG? I believe I am going on my 12th year here.

Where did you go to high school? I went to Streamwood high school. I was born and raised in Streamwood. Still live in my childhood home.

What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? I enjoy seeing the final results of any project we do. It’s rewarding to see the kids enjoying the things we set up for them.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  Right now I’m not reading anything. Between work, watching my son play sports, and spending time with the family, I usually fall asleep the second I get comfortable! When I do read I like fiction, and murder mystery books.

What is something unique about you? I’m not sure it’s unique but I love spending time with my children. They are getting older now and it’s still really cool that they want to hang out with me.

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? What activities at BG do you follow? I don’t coach anything anymore. When my girls were younger I helped coach cheerleading, and found myself always volunteering to be team mom to all the other activities my kids were in. Right now I watch a lot of basketball and soon it will be track because my son plays. At BG I usually follow the outside sports like football, soccer, baseball and softball.
