Friday Focus:
Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Amish Project who performed to audiences from across the State at the Illinois High School Theater Fest at ISU last weekend. In order to be selected for Theater Fest, two respondents viewed one of our fall performances of The Amish Project in September. Following the performance, the respondents hosted a “talk-back” to question the cast and crew about their experiences. The respondents then submitted their findings to the Theater Fest Committee. The Committee selected shows to perform at Theater Fest from submissions from throughout the State. The Amish Project was awarded two Friday night performances, and received standing ovations for both!
The Bison Impact:
- Congratulations to both the Varsity and JV Scholastic Bowl teams, winning matches at both the Varsity and JV levels to start the MSL season 4-0 at both levels!

In less than two-and-a-half minutes, Floro doubled that lead for the Bison by scoring eight unanswered points for a 56-40 lead with 1:44 left. Barrington never recovered as the Bison wrapped up a 59-49 triumph to avenge a 66-56 loss to the Fillies in November. Read Story
Buffalo Grove toughs out win over Barrington
The Daily Herald, January 7, 2020
The scratch on Kam Craft's neck, right over his Adam's apple, was deep and red and fresh, barely crusted over, and still a little oozie. "I'm not even sure how it happened," Craft said. "I've got to go to the trainer and get it checked out." Meanwhile, Craft's teammate, Tyler Fricke, was nursing a busted lip and a dislocated tooth that looked like it was on the verge of falling out. He tried to take a charge. Buffalo Grove boys basketball coach Keith Peterson could see this coming. Read Story

Staff Spotlight
1. What is your name? Jeanne Shin-Cooper
2. What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? I am a teacher in the Social Science/World Languages Department and in my 16th year of teaching at BG.
3. Where did you go to high school? I graduated from Lake Forest High School.
4. What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? There are really two parts that are most meaningful for me. First, I love making relationships with my students and feeling like I make a difference in the world. Especially heart-warming is to witness student growth into adulthood and to keep in touch with former students beyond high school and college. I also love the personal connections in class. Students often make me laugh and keep me young (thanks to 2nd and 6th period for teaching me slang ;). The other part of my love of teaching is the opportunity to continuously be a nerd! I really enjoy learning new things especially about the world, which is why I love Human Geo.
5. What is something unique about you? I am an athlete. I was a field hockey student-athlete for the University of Michigan and had a short stint as a 2nd assistant at Northwestern before starting my teaching career. This past fall, I was invited by the Big Ten Network to be a color commentator for three live games on TV. It was one of the scariest things I've ever done, but it was also very fun! Although I am not comfortable in the spotlight, I thought it was important to have my face on TV because growing up I rarely saw Asian-American athletes who looked like me and I felt the BTN opportunity was another way I could make a small difference in the world.
6. What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? I am currently reading The Island of Sea Women, which is a historical fiction about traditional Korean female divers off of Jeju Island. Historical fiction is my favorite genre to read. My favorite podcast is Fresh Air with Terry Gross. She is one of the best interviewers.
7. What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? I am proud to sponsor the Model United Nations Club. There are so many overlapping parallels with Model UN and Human Geo, so it's an easy love for me. I am often in awe of the creativity and intelligence of the students. I am most impressed with their growth. It is a wonderful experience as a teacher to witness their gain in confidence and skills from freshman to senior year. Many students are initially intimidated because Model UN involves public speaking and research, but we act as a very supportive family and help one another. Upperclassmen help teach and train underclassmen and it works out really well.
