Friday Focus: Security Pro Certification Exam
Congratulations to the following students who passed their first certification exam in college cybersecurity: Casey Leichsenring, Nikita Yakimenko, Apoorv Sagar Pitta, Nicholas Edstrom, Drew Edstrom, Alan Ilinskiy, Aditya Bhati, Ryan Pearlman, and Velislava Milchova. The TestOut Security Pro certification measures an examinee's ability to perform tasks commonly performed by IT security professionals such as network and systems administrators and IT security specialists. These professionals are typically responsible for helping to implement and maintain security protocols and best practices. Passing the TestOut Security Pro Certification means you are capable of implementing layered security through group policy objects, access control lists, wireless and wired local area network security measures, and workstation and mobile device security measures.

Fall 2022 Cyber Power Rankings
Every year, over 10,000 students from more than 500 colleges & universities and 100 high schools across the US participate in the NCL competitions. These rankings represent the ability of students from these schools to perform real-world cybersecurity tasks on the Cyber Skyline platform. Students had to identify hackers from forensic data, pentest & audit vulnerable websites, recover from ransomware attacks, and more. Schools are ranked based on their top team performance, their top student's individual performance, and the aggregate individual performance of their students. Buffalo Grove High School placed 17th in the competition and is ranked 16th in the Nation! The Bison Impact:
Congratulations to junior, Priya Adiga, on qualifying to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) this spring! Priya earned a score of more than 100 on the American Mathematics Competition 12 (AMC 12) test earlier this year, placing her among some of the highest achieving math students in the state. The AIME is the second in the sequence of mathematics contests which leads to participation in the USA Mathematical Olympiad and the designation of Winners of the USA(J)MO. In addition to this, Priya is currently the 4th highest Oralist in all of NSML (North Suburban Math League) with only 1 meet remaining in February! For all the time and energy Priya puts into her passion for math, we heartily congratulate Priya on this incredible and rare accomplishment!

Congratulations to the Scholastic Bowl team on 2nd place at the Reinstein Varsity Tourney! 70 teams from the Midwest competed in Standard and Über Competitive classes. BG finished 2nd in Über university level class. Congratulations to the top individual player, Rohan Ganeshan, with 117 points per 20 questions (for reference, the nearest competitor scored 90.)

Congratulations to the Speech Team on their success at the Ugly Sweater Soiree competition last weekend in South Elgin! Congratulations to Kayla O’Malley on earning 1st in Oral Declamation, Aniketh Subash 3rd in Impromptu, Sarah Larson 4th in Poetry and 2nd place overall for the team!
Congratulations to Bison Wrestling place winners at a very tough Russ Erb tournament last weekend at Glenbrook South: Vlad Fedorchenko (2nd place), Caden Watson and John Saracco (both 5th place).
Congratulations to the Boys Basketball team on an exciting win over Hampshire 53-52 Monday night, including senior Captain Jack Bank with a left handed buzzer beater!
Congratulations to Swimmer Ella Houston, recognized at the recent District 214 Board of Education meeting for her 5th place finish at the IHSA State Swim and Dive Meet last month.

What is your name? My name is Maria Barrrera or “Ms.B” is what my students call me.
What department do you work in? I work in the EL Department of Buffalo Grove.
How long have you been working at BG? I have been working at Buffalo Grove since September of this year.
Where did you go to high school/ college? I went to Elk Grove High School and graduated from National Louis University in the summer of this year.
What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? The part of working at Buffalo Grove that I find the most rewarding is seeing my students come out of their shells and blossom into critical thinkers who are not afraid to share their insights.
What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? My favorite podcast of all time is the H3H3 Podcast, a comedy podcast that keeps up with pop-culture and other relevant events in the media
What is something unique about you? Something unique about me is that I am an artist, I enjoy drawing, painting, and creating art pieces for myself in my free time.
What’s a bucket list item for you? Something on my bucket list is to go to a Rolling Loud music festival one day.

ATTENTION SENIORS!
BGPA Scholarship Application is Now Open
The Buffalo Grove High School Parent Association (“BGPA”) and donor Mrs. Jackie Sell are pleased to award scholarships to recognize the achievement of our students. The winners will be selected based on school and community involvement, leadership, motivation, and academics, as well as a compelling personal essay. All graduating BGHS Class of 2023 seniors are eligible for this scholarship. Additionally, scholarship Applicants must plan to attend a post-secondary or technical school as a full-time or part-time student and must meet District 214’s requirements to participate in and to be awarded a diploma at commencement in 2022. The Scholarship is an outright gift and will be announced and disbursed at the Principal's Awards Night on May 17, 2023.
All applications will be reviewed with complete anonymity. The completed application (with required signatures) must be received in the BGHS College/Career Center by the end of school on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. All decisions made by BGPA will be final. Apprenticeship Opportunity for Current Juniors
District 214 offers a variety of youth apprenticeship programs, including registered apprenticeships, which meet standards defined by the United States Department of Labor and youth apprenticeships. Youth Apprenticeships are employer-driven, “learn while you earn” models that combine structured paid on-the-job training with job-related instruction in curricula that may lead to the attainment of industry-recognized skills standards and an industry credential. Instruction and technical training related to the apprenticeship is provided by the high school, technical schools, or community colleges; on-the-job training occurs at a worksite. The goal is to provide students with advanced skill sets that meet specific employer needs. Often, employers hire students who have been through their apprenticeship program full-time upon graduation and cover additional training and certification expenses. In partnership with local employers, apprenticeships are currently offered in the fields of:
Athletic Training Assistant
Automotive
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Construction and Trades
Graphic Arts
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)
Information Technology (Cybersecurity, IT Generalist and Help Desk)
Manufacturing
MultiMedia
Pharmacy Technician
Professional Cook
Veterinary Technician Assistant
Students interested in an apprenticeship must be committed to the program and work with their counselor to ensure all required coursework fits into the student’s four-year academic plan. Important to note is that all apprenticeships require that specific coursework be completed before the application. The application is open until January 15th, 2023.
