Friday Focus - National Merit Scholarship students announced!
Buffalo Grove High School is extremely proud to announce the commended scholars and semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Over 1.6 million students took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October and entered a nationwide competition for recognition and awards.
The Buffalo Grove High School semifinalists are Colin Groh, Benjamin Justie, and Sarah Smith. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SATⓇ scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Our three semifinalists are part of only 16,000 semifinalists nationwide.
Officials also named eighteen Buffalo Grove High School students as commended scholars. These students will be recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test. The commended scholars are Kiarra Akiyoshi, Danielle Allaire, Divya Bhati, Daniel Ferriss, Erika Jaszka, Lauren Komrska, Yin Kwok, Sarah Levato, Jordan McDonald, Jack Metzger, Edward Moder, Alexander Morain, Andrew Pocklington, Caitlin Roser, Leonard Rule, Linnea Rylander, Maxim Sharipov, Oleksandra Tsibere. These scholarship recipients will join only 315,000 other distinguished young people nationwide who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Parents Needed for District 214 Focus Group!
As part of High School District 214's continued effort to expand access to early college credits, District 214 is considering new opportunities that could include online learning through a major university. We are looking to hear from 15-20 parents of Buffalo Grove High School juniors regarding this idea, potential challenges, and other opportunities that enhance student success.
This focus group would meet for roughly 45-minutes, beginning at 6:00pm prior to the BGPA meeting in the Community Room on Wednesday, October 19, and light refreshments will be provided. The ideal candidates would be parents of juniors who are not enrolled currently in Advanced Placement classes but would be interested in other options for earning early college credit.
If you would like to participate in this focus group, please R.S.V.P. to my assistant, Debbie Jacks at (847) 718-4011 or debra.jacks@d214.org by Wednesday, October 12.
We hope to see you there!

Never was that more true than Friday night at Grant Blaney stadium, especially from the perspective of BG. Finally coming up with the big game on defense that it had been looking for all season, Buffalo Grove shut down Hersey's offense in a 42-14 homecoming win. Read Story
Buffalo Grove's Jack Pontarelli summons the strength to play
The Chicago Tribune, September 21, 2016
Buffalo Grove football coach Jeff Vlk never questioned Jack Pontarelli's toughness or courage. All he had to do was ask last season's varsity wrestling coach — himself. Vlk coached Pontarelli last season in wrestling until stepping down to take the football job. But Vlk acknowledged that despite his background with Pontarelli, he wondered if the tough-as-nails senior defensive back could play against Vernon Hills on Friday, Sept. 16, due to an illness.
