 Friday Focus:

Congrats to our 2022 Homecoming Court and to HC Royalty Holden Wheeler and Jack Cadre!

Thank you to our amazing past Homecoming Kings and Queens from 50 years of Bison history! Fight On!

Homecoming past and present!  50 years of Bison Pride.

Homecoming 2022….That’s a wrap!

The Bison Impact:

We kick off this school year's season of The Unspoken Herd by discussing what great things are new (and old) here at BGHS! Mr. Schaetzlein, Associate Principal and Co-Curricular Coordinator, joins hosts Jack Greenspan, Spencer Smith, and Max Shultz to discuss new clubs and activities at the school. Even more importantly, he talks about upcoming events to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary including a special surprise appearance by former alumni at the homecoming assembly. You won't want to miss our first episode of the year, available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcast, Spotify and MORE! Just search The Unspoken Herd!

On Wednesday, Oct. 12th, ALL juniors will be participating in testing.

Juniors must report to their assigned testing area promptly at 8:30AM.

Items to bring are a photo ID, sharpened # 2 pencils, and a college board approved calculator.

Room and seat assignments will be posted outside of the assessment center.

We ask that you know your testing assignment BEFORE test day.

If you do not see your student ID on the list, please go to the Assessment Center in G150.

Once testing is completed, junior testers will be excused for the day.

Students who have an IEP or 504 Plan will be tested with their approved College Board accommodations and may follow a different test schedule. Please see your case manager or counselor with any questions regarding your accommodations or test schedule.

We want all students to perform their very best. Please encourage your student to get a good night’s rest and to eat a nourishing breakfast.

Extra help is available for students at the next Bison Academy.

Buffalo Grove High School’s Bison Grove Theatre Company is excited to present a humorous theatrical competition for this year’s fall play with ComedySportz High School League.  Students from Buffalo Grove will participate and compete against each other at each of the performances, which take place on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 at 7pm at in the Miller Theatre at Buffalo Grove High School.

The show is known to be a hilarious interactive 90-minute show where two teams compete for your laughs in comedy scenes, songs and games right on the spot based on your suggestions. You choose the winner and the show is never the same twice. It’s clean, smart comedy for audiences of all ages!

Comedy Sportz High School League teaches students the art of improvisation, allowing each performance to be different and unique.  The students are working with Rudy Voit, a member of Comedy Sportz Chicago. Rudy has worked with the cast teaching the actors to learn and perform improvisation. Voit will “referee” the show live for audiences at each performance. Buffalo Grove Co-Director Beth Wells says, “It is so rare that students get to learn from and perform alongside a professional actor. Improvisation teaches life skills like communication, teamwork, and being resilient in the face of failure.”  Wells goes on to say, “Our students will be working in improv comedy teams and developing an entertaining evening of sketch comedy.”  The professional organization echoes these thoughts and states, “The League provides professional fine-arts instruction in Chicago’s home-grown theatrical art, improv comedy.  More importantly, the program instills, by regular practice and reinforcement, values of inclusion, support, flexibility, and resiliency to counter existing cultural pressures that can lead to problems with bullying and depression.”

Tickets are $10 at the door and $7 online. Online tickets for any of the shows include a service charge and may be purchased at tickets.d214.org.  All seating is general admission.  The box office opens 30 minutes before curtain time.  Cash and checks are accepted at the door.  The performance runs approximately 90 minutes, which includes a 15-minute intermission.

Staff Spotlight

What is your name?

Michael Sorenson

What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG?

I currently reside in the CTE department, specifically under the Family and Consumer Sciences umbrella. This is my first year at Buffalo Grove High School, but it's also my first year of teaching!

Where did you go to high school/ college?

I attended Niles West High School, in Skokie IL, and graduated in 2017. I recently just finished my Bachelors Degree in Family and Consumer Science Education from Illinois State University, this past May)

What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding?

The part of teaching I find the most rewarding is seeing the growth of my students over the course of the year. Seeing my students go from "dreamers" to "doers" is something that drives me to continue the job I've always wanted to do. I can't wait to see what my first group of kids do after high school!]

What’s a bucket list item for you? I really want to climb, portaledge camp, a route on Half Dome. Which is a mountain face on El Cap in Yosemite Valley

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?

I like listening to podcasts, specifically by comedians, or any podcast that helps me with the hobbies I am most interested in

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?

I am currently co directing concession with Ms Sheehy for this year's athletic programs. On the side I coach a Peewee hockey team called the Trevians, for Wilmette's hockey program.

What is something unique about you?

I love taking on new hobbies, or anything that keeps me busy. This past year I got into rock climbing just because I needed a job while attending school. A new hobby I am currently trying to learn is woodworking.
