Friday Focus: Do your part to help keep students safe

As the new school year is underway, it is a good time for a reminder about bus safety. When driving in neighborhoods with bus stops, schools and school zones, please slow down and watch out for children walking or bicycling to school. Remember that it is the law to stop at the bus stop arm. When driving on a two-lane road or highway, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop areas indicate that the bus has stopped, and that children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. Slow down while driving through neighborhoods during bus pickup and drop off times. Please review the information below for additional bus safety information.

Staff Spotlight - Sydney Sadler

Staff Member of the week: Sydney Sadler

What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? I'm an English teacher in the English & Fine Arts department. This is my first year teaching at BG and I'm loving it already.

Where did you go to high school/ college? I'm a proud alum of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I got my English degree and certifications for teaching high school and ESL. I'm also happy to say I graduated from Buffalo Grove High School myself (#FightOn)!

What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? Hearing students' voices is my absolute favorite part of teaching. The moments where I call on a student asking what they think, then the student gets shy and says they don't know, then I bug them to keep trying because that's just my way, and then they erupt with the most incredibly thoughtful insight and the whole room celebrates... that's the stuff that gets me out of bed in the morning.

What’s a bucket list item for you? Someday, I want to play violin at Carnegie Hall, just once.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? Currently, I'm reading The Hunger Games along with my students for the Independent Reading unit.

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? I sponsor the Speech Team and Asian Student Association.

What is something unique about you? I'm the only person in my immediate family to have not studied or worked in STEM.

Buffalo Grove stuns Hoffman Estates with 2-point conversion in OT

The Daily Herald, August 25, 2023

Trailing visiting Hoffman Estates 21-7 entering the fourth quarter things were not looking good for Buffalo Grove in the Bison's Mid-Suburban League crossover football opener against the Hawks Friday night. But not only did Buffalo Grove almost win the game on a 30-yard field goal as regulation time expired, the Bison somehow managed to pull out a 29-28 MSL victory in overtime by scoring on a 2-point conversion pass to win it. Football Preview: Bison Charge Ahead

Journal-Topics, August 24, 2023

Experience, intelligence and perspective all matter when it comes to success in any line of work. So forgive eighth-year Buffalo Grove varsity football coach Jeff Vlk, when he raves about how he feels his 2023 roster has all three. “This is the highest team grade point average (GPA) we’ve had as a group since I’ve been here,” Vlk said. “We’ve got 20 kids either close to, at, or above a 4.0 GPA.” That’s not all they have. The Bison have 18 of their 22 starters from last season returning. Read Story
