Friday Focus:
Careers in Arts & Communication/Human Services
Students and their parents are invited to an information-packed lineup of free events this fall focused on career exploration. The second in the series of District 214 Career Nights, Careers in Arts & Communication/Human Services, will be held at Prospect High School on Tuesday, September 17 at 7:00 pm. On-site registration begins at 6:00 p.m. The evening will conclude at 8:30 p.m.
Career Nights provide a glimpse into a variety of careers, allowing students and parents to meet with industry professionals and hear about the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in each field. Career Nights are a great opportunity for District 214 students and their parents to get their questions about careers answered and make connections with professionals while simultaneously learning how the District’s Career Pathways program can help them reach their goals and gain skills to succeed.
The Bison Impact:
- The D214 AASL National School Library Program of the Year award visited BGHS this week! It’s like the Stanley Cup: it even comes with its own gloves.
- The BGHS Marching Band participated in the first ever marching festival at Hersey last weekend. All performed well and received great feedback! It was also a great opportunity for the different schools to bond! Drum majors from Rolling Meadows, Hersey, and BG are pictured below.
- BGHS Band students visited Poe, Kilmer, and Longfellow elementary schools last week on their Mini Band Mini Tour!
- BG Elevate visited Thomas Middle School students last week to speak about Mood and Mindset, and Values Driving Decision Making and Behavior.
- Congrats to our Class of 2020 Girls Golfers celebrating Senior Night this week!
- Congratulations to BGHS alum Doug Ghim embarking on his PGA career after earning a spot on the PGA Tour last week!

Tyler Oddo expected some tough moments. After playing wide receiver last season, the Buffalo Grove senior moved to linebacker to fill a need for his team. The Bison defense, a collection of numerous young players, struggled to stop Barrington on Friday. The Broncos scored 21 points in the second quarter to cruise to a 42-0 victory in a Mid-Suburban League crossover game in Barrington. “We’re a very young team with a lot of guys in new places, a lot of guys moving around from last year,” Oddo said. “We’re just trying to get our camaraderie going. Our heart is what we really evaluate over the score. It was a tough game. We knew it was going to be tough, but we fought hard. That’s all we can ask for.” Read Story
Area Seniors Picked As National Merit Semifinalists

Several seniors from area high schools have been picked as semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The "academically talented high school seniors” are among 16,000 nationwide picked to continue in the National Merit competition as they vie for 7,600 in scholarships totaling $31 million, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday. Nicholas C. Castaneda was the lone Buffalo Grove High School senior selected as a national merit scholarship semi-finalist. Read Story

Staff Spotlight
1. What is your name? Sara Farrell
2. What department do you teach in/How long have you been teaching at BG? This is my 15th year teaching in the CTE department here at BGHS. I teach graphic design and PLTW-IED classes.
3. Where did you go to high school? Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville
4. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? This is too hard to pick just 1... I love when students tell me, "This is my favorite class." I also love seeing projects my students have worked on displayed around the school and when they are recognized for their hard work. This summer I received an email from a student letting me know she had won 2nd place in the GAERF contest we entered during class and was awarded with a check for $1500. Shout out to 2019 grad Lauren Horvath!
5. What is something unique about you? I will be running the Disney Goofy Challenge in January with my dad, sisters and cousins. Half marathon Saturday + full marathon Sunday.
6. What are you currently reading, and/or do you have a favorite author or podcast? JK Rowling - sharing and reading her books with my son was the best!
7. What activities or clubs do you coach/sponsor? I am the coordinator for our NGE - Next Generation of Engineers program. This is a set of classes we run after school for middle schoolers who will be attending BGHS.
