Principal Wardle's Weekly Blog 11/11/2016

Friday Focus  -  The lasting effect of co-curricular sports and activities.

The majority of Buffalo Grove students are involved in co-curricular activities.  Recent additional research continues to support student involvement in activities, clubs, and athletics as an avenue for developing well-rounded adults.  Involved students grow more than their non-involved peers in self-expression, acceptance, long term memory, reading, and the value of team over self, and many other areas.  Please encourage your student to give a BG club, activity, or sport a chance this year!

Buffalo Grove High School group Elevate encourages student to make smarter choices
Chicago Tribune, November 7, 2016

A new student group at Buffalo Grove High School believe they have some of the answers to why teenagers experiment with vices — drugs, alcohol use, bad eating and sleeping habits. The eight students who helped start the group, called Elevate, also like to talk with their peers and share a new understanding about the effects sleep, nutrition and drug use can have on teenagers' minds and bodies.  Read Story

Teachers leave their political views at the door:  Many say students are better served by having space to form own opinions
Chicago, Tribune, November 6, 2016
Every year, Zack Crandall asks his students at Buffalo Grove High School if they can guess his political leanings. The results, he said, are typically an even split between Democrat and Republican. "That's my goal," he said. "They don't know where I come from."  Crandall, who teaches mostly seniors in advanced placement history and government classes, said he has a strict policy of keeping his political beliefs out of the classroom, focusing solely on providing balanced, impartial lessons. "I don't want (them) to feel any information I'm presenting is in a biased way," he said. Read Story

Chicago Tribune, November 6, 2016

Thomas Kelly caught the first touchdown pass in the career of sophomore quarterback Connor Adams in the Bison's 28-25 season-opening loss Aug. 26 at Niles West.
In retrospect, that connection signified the start of a new era. "(Adams) stepped into a position that not many seniors can play, and he moved into a leadership role and did very well with it," Kelly said. Seven games later, Adams completed 16 of 20 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in the Bison's 42-12 victory against Elk Grove on Oct. 14. Buffalo Grove ended its first season the first under new coach Jeff Vlk, the longtime defensive coordinator, with a 3-6 mark. The Bison went 2-3 in Mid-Suburban East play. That might not be impressive in many programs, but the Bison were coming off a one-win season the year before. Read Story
