Staff Spotlight
What is your name? Amy Rivera
What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? I teach Math, and this is my first year as a Bison! (My 6th in the district)
Where did you go to high school? I went to high school at Wheeling.
What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? I love when students see tangible gains in my classes, both academically and personally. It's so rewarding when my students build up confidence in their skills and especially learning brand new things. Sometimes the biggest gains aren't as academic, either, and students mature over the course of the class, come out of their shell, become leaders in the classroom, etc.
What new thing have you learned this year teaching remotely? This isn't necessarily something "new," but my belief that teaching is far more than delivering instruction or facilitating activities has definitely been solidified. Classes are far more relevant and productive when there's strong teacher-student rapport. Remote learning inhibited that for me a bit, so I had to get creative in building those relationships, but this is one of the main reasons I'm so looking forward to more students coming back in the building!!
What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? I just started The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to discuss with my 11-year-old, while he reads it, too. Aside from that, mostly just childrens books with my two younger kids - at least until summer when I'll grab a couple books I've had my eye on!
What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? Currently, I coach girls gymnastics here at BG - one of my greatest passions :)
What is something unique about you? Something unique about me is that I'm bilingual! Ever since I was in middle school/high school, I admired the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. I studied Spanish in college and even lived abroad in Spain for a couple months. Now, my husband's first language is Spanish, and we're teaching our kids Spanish at home. I love that part of our family - making not only the language but many Hispanic customs and traditions part of our daily life.

Outlook: Buffalo Grove is 2-0 in the MSL East for the first time since 2016.
