Bison Academy - Extra Support to Finish Strong

Saturday, May 15th: 8:30 am - 11:00 am

Tuesday, May 24th: 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm

The Bison Academy is a service provided by Buffalo Grove High School to help students raise a grade, make up missing work due to absences, or just find a quiet place to complete work. A small selection of BG staff and National Honor Society tutors are available at The Bison Academy. Though help at the honors and AP level is not always available, the Bison Academy can provide an environment for collaboration, guidance, and support. Students will also have access to the computer lab and other school supplies that they may need to complete projects.

If you or your student are interested, please make contact through your child's teachers so they can leave the appropriate work to be completed and provide additional guidance. Contact can also be made through counselors, who can then share the plan with your child's teacher. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Raucci (847-718-4269) for more information or clarification. We look forward to helping your BG student!

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? Isabel Rodriguez

What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? I have been a long-term sub in the World Language department in BG where I taught different levels of Spanish, both native speakers and non-native speakers. Currently, I work as an instructional assistant in the EL department. This is my second year in the district.

Where did you go to high school?  I went to high school in Spain. I had a very different experience than the one my students have. I love the fact that students here have so many options of activities including sports and performance art. There is truly a sense of community and I am glad to be part of it.

What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding?  In my new position, as an instructional assistant, being able to work with students one-on-one and seeing their progress in the different subjects has been the most rewarding aspect of teaching. Also, I work with a very caring team of assistants and together we have communicated with families and we have taken care of our students’ needs, not only educational but also emotional, during this difficult year. This is a very rewarding job.

What new thing have you learned this year teaching remotely? Teaching remotely has taught me that we are social beings and students need to feel part of the high school community in order to be successful. I know it sounds obvious now, but I think we used to take that for granted prior to Covid. Even in this challenging year, we educators have learned how to connect with students via Zoom and we have tried our best to make them feel they were part of our classes and that they were still the most important piece of the school puzzle.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  I love reading! I don’t really have a favorite author, but I do have a very long list of books that I still need to read. I am currently reading The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. I don’t normally listen to podcasts, or even the radio. If I listen to something other than music it is probably going to be an audiobook. I’m currently listening to This Close to Okay by Leesa Cross-Smith.

What activities or clubs do you coach/sponsor?  I am not currently sponsoring any activities, but in the past, I have co-sponsored Spanish Club and Human Rights Club.

What is something unique about you?  Even though I come from a place with warm weather, I don’t like summer and I much prefer winter.
