Friday Focus: New! D214 Summer Experience
District 214 is excited to announce the D214 Summer Experience! The purpose of the Summer Experience is to not only help students stay on track for graduation, but also to explore the things that ignite their passions through a variety of academic, athletic, and enrichment experiences. Formerly known as Summer School, D214 Summer Experience 2023 includes the following:
Credit recovery coursework (in-person and online)
Get-ahead coursework (in-person and online)
Enrichment classes (in-person)
Driver’s education (in-person)
Summer athletic camps (in-person)
Registration for Summer Experience 2023 begins at 8:00 am on Wednesday, March 1st. An early bird discount is available through April 15th. A how-to video has been created to help families navigate the registration system, WATCH IT HERE. To register, you will need your student’s D214 student ID number, student’s date of birth, household zip code, and the student’s school. The registration system is mobile-friendly, so you can register anywhere with any device. Please check your email for detailed information from the D214 Academic Programs & Pathways Team that will answer many questions you might have.

The Link Together Coalition is offering the Three Ways to Create Emotional Stability in a Changing World webinar from 7:30-8:30 pm on Wednesday, March 8th. Join Dr. Aaron Weiner's virtual presentation about the state of youth mental health, the ongoing pressures of substance use, and how parents & guardians can work with their kids to build emotional resilience. Topics will include:
How parents & guardians can create a sense of stability in unstable times
Three principles to help develop emotional stability during uncertainty, stress or trauma
Ways teens can cope with changes rather than turn to alcohol or marijuana

D214 Sophomore Parent College Planning Seminar
Wednesday, March 1st 7:00 pm
Sophomore parents are invited to attend the D214 Sophomore Parent College Planning Seminar on Wednesday, March 1st, from 7:00-8:15 pm in the BGHS Theater. Topics discussed will include how to start the college conversation with your child, starting to find the right fit, and understanding your options after high school. Representatives from Purdue University and St. Norbert's College will speak about general characteristics of a large public school and a small private school. Asian Student Association Inaugural Showcase

The BGHS Asian Student Association (ASA) will host the first AAPI event in BG history on Friday, March 10 at 6:00 pm, and we hope that you'll join us for an evening of community and belonging. Students have been working hard on organizing:

What is your name? Michelle Strahan
What department do you work in? Guided Study & Stampede
How long have you been working at BG? I just started working at BG this past fall!
Where did you go to high school/ college? I went to college at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio (Go Bobcats!)
What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? I absolutely love working in partnership with students! It is incredible to watch a student put a new skill into action and realize the reward of approaching a challenge in a different way. Each person has their own unique strengths and stories and I am grateful to be a part of the academic journey of the students I get to work with everyday.
What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast? I am re-reading the Goldfinch by Donna Tartt as it is very powerfully and beautifully written.
What is something unique about you? I am also a professional photographer
What’s a bucket list item for you? I would love to visit Italy and see Calabria, the home of some of my ancestors. I also would love to get the chance to photograph a game for our city's Major League Soccer team, the Chicago Fire!

BGPA Scholarship Application is Now Open
The Buffalo Grove High School Parent Association (“BGPA”) and donor Mrs. Jackie Sell are pleased to award scholarships to recognize the achievement of our students. The winners will be selected based on school and community involvement, leadership, motivation, and academics, as well as a compelling personal essay. All graduating BGHS Class of 2023 seniors are eligible for this scholarship. Additionally, scholarship Applicants must plan to attend a post-secondary or technical school as a full-time or part-time student and must meet District 214’s requirements to participate in and to be awarded a diploma at commencement in 2022. The Scholarship is an outright gift and will be announced and disbursed at the Principal's Awards Night on May 17, 2023.
All applications will be reviewed with complete anonymity. The completed application (with required signatures) must be received in the BGHS College/Career Center by the end of school on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. All decisions made by BGPA will be final. District 214 Scholarship Application Now Open
Deadline March 17th
The online portal is now OPEN to apply for scholarships through the District 214 Education Foundation. Please share this information with your senior students. The deadline for all Foundation scholarships is Friday, March 17, 2023.
Through the generosity of donors, the Foundation is offering nearly $90,000 in scholarships, including specific opportunities for students pursuing certificates in the trades; females pursuing careers in STEM or law; students demonstrating leadership and involvement at specific high schools; and the annual Redefining Ready! competition that asks seniors to tell the world in a video how they are college, career and life ready. Awards range from $500 to $8,000, and each scholarship has unique criteria. A full list of available Foundation scholarships can be found at www.214foundation.org/scholarships.
We encourage all seniors to visit the Scholarship Portal (d214.awardspring.com; also accessible at www.214foundation.org/scholarships) to complete a brief profile, which will match them with scholarships for which they are eligible. Once matched, students may apply directly online. Students will have to create an account to register and begin the application. Click “Register” under “Don’t have an account?” to begin the process. Students should be as thorough as possible in their application.
Incomplete applications will not be accepted nor considered.
