 Friday Focus:

Alumni Return for 50th Anniversary Band Concert

Last Sunday, a standing room only crowd of nearly 500 people enjoyed the 50th Anniversary Band Showcase celebrating “Bison Band Excellence”. Nearly 150 musicians participated in the concert, with alumni from all five decades joining the concert and symphonic bands in the performance. BG’s first Director of Bands, Bob Rogers, was in attendance, along with other former band directors Ed Jacobi and Henry Kappler. Band director, Bill Carroll, who tragically died in a car accident during his time at BG, was honored with a tribute performed by the symphonic band. A letter from former Director of Bands, Dr. Keith Ramsden, was also shared. CLICK HERE to read about the event on SuburbTalk.com.----------------------------------------------------

2023 Retiree Spotlight on Diane Baldwin

What is your name? Mrs. Diane Baldwin (pictured in the photo on the left, and with fellow retiree Jennifer Schoffstall, on the right)

What department do you teach in/How long have you been teaching at BG? I have been fortunate to be a part of Buffalo Grove High School teaching since 1993 working as a Social Science teacher in a variety of teaching roles within the department. Most recently, teaching both Sociology and U.S. History

What courses have you taught in your career? In my teaching career, I have taught

virtually all the Social Science course offering including Human Geography, World History, World Cultures, Intro to Social Science, Consumers Ed/Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Law and the Individual, American Problems, American Studies, U.S. History and worked collaboratively in many co-taught courses.

What part of the career of teaching have you found the most rewarding? The most rewarding part of teaching has been the connections with students and many of the former athletes I have coached. I really have enjoyed watching the students grow into young adults and hear about so many of their successes. To have taught with so many inspirational teachers and colleagues has been incredibly rewarding. Being a member of this teaching staff has allowed me to forge lifelong friendships of which I will always cherish.

What activities or clubs have you coached/ sponsored? I have coached in a variety of different sports including Girl’s Soccer, Boy’s Soccer, Girl’s Cross Country, Boy’s Cross Country, and the Girl’s Bowling team.

What are you most looking forward to in retirement? I am really looking forward to

traveling and continuing my journey on visiting State and National Parks around the United States. I am excited to spend more time with my family and extended family in Wisconsin and Michigan with a future trip planned to Ireland.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  I love Chicago History and have been reading a book by Leslie Goddard entitled, “Chicago’s Sweet Candy History” learning about the many candy factories that were and still are a vital part of Chicago History and love reading all sorts of historical novels.
