Friday Focus  -  World Languages Dept. organizes Flamenco Music day

Vuelta con flores.jpgOn Wednesday February 22nd, World Language and ESL classes attended a Flamenco Music and Dance Lecture Performance in our BG theater.  Three performers including a guitarist, a singer and a flamenco dancer presented an interactive demonstration involving students as a group throughout the performance. The performers explained how the Flamenco originated many years ago with the gypsies in Southern Spain and how it continues to be an important part of today's culture.  Students were introduced to various types of Flamenco and also participated in a "Palmas" demonstration clapping out rhythms while the artists performed. In addition, seven students were invited up to the stage to learn some dance moves with the performers.  The performance ended with a question and answer session. Funding received from our District 214 Arts Unlimited organization made this event possible. Claudia teaches 2.jpg

Buffalo Grove's Jessica Soskich repeats as state bowling champion
Chicago Tribune, February 20, 2017

Buffalo Grove's Jessica Soskich Wins State Again
Journal-Topics, February 20, 2017
Over 120 bowlers tried to unseat Buffalo Grove’s Jessica Soskich, but none were successful for the second straight year at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. Last Saturday, Soskich became the first back-to-back state champion in girls bowling since Rockford East’s Liz Berg in 1998 and 1999. Winnebago’s Ellen Morrison (2005, 2007) is the only other two-time champion in IHSA history since girls bowling started in 1979-80. Soskich’s individual championship is also the eighth overall from the Journal-area.  Read Story

1. What is your name?  Kate Goebel
2. What department have you/ do you work in? Math/Science Department
Chemistry, ELL Chemistry, ELL Prep Chemistry, and Biology (I've also taught Honors Chemistry and Physical Science)

3. How long have you been working at BG? This is my 12th year.

4. Where did you go to high school? Plainfield High School (now known as Central...but it was the only high school in Plainfield when I attended)
5. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding?  Science tends to be a hard subject for many students, especially Chemistry. I try to provide multiple opportunities for students to learn and grow. My favorite part is when the light bulb goes on, or when the students' eyes widen and brighten because they've found the confidence in themselves they might not have had when they started.  It doesn't happen in everyone, but when it does, it's the best part of the job. It's something they can carry with them as they tackle other obstacles in their life.

I also really enjoy my colleagues.  We are lucky to get the chance to learn and grow from each other, which I think keeps us all constantly improving for our students and unified in support of one another.  I feel very blessed to work in the department that I'm in.
6. What is something unique about you?  I love Olympic Weightlifting...which I think many misunderstand as power lifting or body building. I got into it a few years ago, competed in a few local competitions, and medaled in some. I also received my coaching certification so that I can help others. I actually just programmed and coached a BG alum through his first competition. He did great, and is fired up to continue moving forward. One of my goals after I have my daughter is to compete at a local competition in the fall.

7. What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? None currently. In the past I coached cheerleading, helped run the Freshman Advisory Program, and ran an after school tutoring program.  I currently work at Elite Athletic Development in Arlington Heights twice a week coaching different health and fitness classes.  What is great about that job is that more and more BG athletes are coming to us during their off seasons to get stronger.  I might not be coaching at school currently, but it's wonderful that I work at a place that can contribute to the athletes of the programs at BG.

Teresa Riles a steady force for young Buffalo Grove gymnastics team
Chicago Tribune, February 3, 2017
Teresa Riles' gymnastics experience helped Buffalo Grove all season, but her leadership is especially pertinent in the postseason. Riles, a senior, made her high school gymnastics debut last season after two years of club competition at the Buffalo Grove Gymnastics Center. The stark difference between the two — club gymnasts might compete three or four times all season, while varsity gymnasts compete up to twice per week — can be jarring initially. Read Story
