Friday Focus  -  Multicultural Show
Last Friday was our multicultural show.  Several of our own students, as well as a number of local enterprises performed traditional songs, dances, and traditions.  It was a great way to celebrate the cultural diversity at Buffalo Grove High School!  Did you know that over 40 home languages are represented within the student body at Buffalo Grove?

Staff Spotlight

1.  What is your name?  Rich Mele

2.  What department do you teach in/what courses do you teach?   I teach in the Math/Science Department.  I currently teach Honors Precalculus and College Algebra.

3.  How long have you been teaching at BGHS?   This is my 3rd year at BGHS.  I previously taught 14 years in the district at Elk Grove High School.

4.  Where did you go to high school?   I graduated from St. Viator High School in 1984.

5.  What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding?   Even though it is a great feeling to see the light bulb turn on in a student's head when the understanding of a new or challenging mathematical concept takes place, it is even more rewarding when I am able to create an environment where students feel comfortable no matter what their ability level is.  Helping a student become a better person is quite often as important and sometimes more important than making them a better math student.

6.  What is something unique about you?   The thought of being a teacher never crossed my mind while growing up.  I graduated college the first time with an Economics degree.  Then at age 30 it hit me.  I need to be on the classroom.  I went back to school and got a teaching degree in Mathematics.  Almost 20 years later here I am, very happy to be teaching at BGHS.

7.  What activities or clubs to do you coach/sponsor?   As of now, I am not coaching at BGHS.  While at EGHS I coached Boys Golf for 10 years and was a Math Team coach for 5 years.  I am looking forward to the right coaching opportunity at BGHS.  I currently help out in the Lit Lab after school and offer my time to help students during lunch hour and after school.
