Friday Focus  - Educator Prep Program rollout

214.jpgYesterday, the eyes of the nation were truly on District 214.  Representatives from Capitol Hill and New York came to speak on behalf of this D214 program, as we launched a first-of-its-kind in the nation program called Educator Prep.

It allows high school students, as early as freshman year, to declare their intention to become teachers, and supports them through high school and then college, through to employment as an educator in a primary or secondary school in our own community.  Here, 25 students sign letters of intent to be the first ones enrolled in this program, including 3 students from Buffalo Grove!

Celebrating Our Success!

Please join us in saluting Sven Cederberg, part of the security team at Buffalo Grove High School. Sven was nominated by a parent, who noted he sees his job truly as an extension of the school, and genuinely cares for every single student. During our interview with him, we found him to be a wealth of stories that clearly illustrated his passion for his work and his love for Buffalo Grove High School. You can watch his story.

Congratulations to Varsity Baseball player, Cedric Cavazos, on signing to play baseball for University of Northwestern St Paul!

Friday Focus  -  G.I.C. class builds a home for a Wounded Vet
This semester the Geometry in Construction class was tasked with building a home for a wounded Veteran in Tennessee.  The students in the class, along with students from RMHS, used the skills they learned in class this year to build all the exterior and interior walls to the proper specifications.  The walls were then shipped to Speedwell, Tennessee where they were assembled by a team of volunteers from all over the country.  Although the students did not get to assemble the house, they did get a chance to understand the inner working of how a house is constructed as well as the satisfaction of giving back to someone in need.  Here are pictures from this past weekend's build in TN, where teacher Sean Murrin and CTE director Jeff Bott were on site.

High Mileage Competition
Students recently competed in the High Mileage Vehicle competition held at Road America race track in Wisconsin.  Students designed, fabricated, and drove a homemade car powered by a 6 horsepower Honda motor.  The goal is not to be the fastest, but to achieve the highest miles per gallon possible.  BGHS entered 4 cars this year with one of the cars reaching 385 MPG.  That was good enough for 4th place out of 50 cars.  The 4th place car was driven by Ethan Lindborg and Adrian Rodriguez.

Buffalo Grove senior Kaitlin Gloria placed third in Informational Graphics at one of the most challenging IHSA Sectional Journalism competitions in the state. Kaitlin advanced to the state contest, where she competed against the top 21 students in this category and was named the sixth place finisher in the state. Her dedication and commitment to Buffalo Grove's student newspaper The Charger for the past four years is truly admirable.

Sarah Cottone and Lindsey Hammel placed third at the IHSA State Journalism competition in the category of Yearbook Theme Development. They also placed first at the sectional competition for the second consecutive year. Sarah and Lindsey are both editors of Buffalo Grove's yearbook and contribute countless numbers of hours to making the publication the best it can be for the student body and staff to enjoy.

FullSizeRender (19).jpg1. What is your name? Elizabeth Pilarski

2. What department do you teach in/ what courses do you teach? Counselor for ELL and regular students.

3. How long have you been working at BG? I have been at BG for sixteen years, after I transferred from a position of a College counselor from Chicago High School.

4. Where did you go to high school?  I graduated from a suburban High School in Poland

5. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding?   I feel really blessed to be part of BGHS.   Many of my students, over a hundred on my counseling load, come to the United States from all over the world.  Some of them come here willingly and with great enthusiasm, but most of the students immigrate to the US to join their parents whom they have not seen for many many years, or simply to follow their parents.  They leave behind the grandparents who they were growing up with, their friends, and are asked to immediately adjust to a new set of rules, unknown culture, and communicate in the new language to them, the English language.  They often times feel lost and abandoned.  Their anxiety becomes especially visible when they come to register for school.  Language is a huge obstacle for them and their parents to conquer.  I am fortunate to be able to communicate with them in a few languages and ease the anxiety and the feeling of alienation.  My main goal during our first encounter is to make them feel welcome, and assure their parents that their children will be safe and happy at BG.  The smiles that I see when I start speaking to them in their own language, melts the ice immediately.  Even though I have students from as far as Greece, Korea, Sudan, Romania, Bulgaria, India, Pakistan, Japan, Iran, Turkey, China, and I am not able to converse in their languages, I am so aware of their culture, and their values that it is easy to earn their trust and cooperation even in the most difficult circumstances.  Education has always been an integral part of my and their everyday life.  They are expected and aspire to perform as well as they did in their home schools.   Parents look for advice from me, especially when it comes to their children's higher education.  I am able to share  my own experiences of an immigrant coming to the United States with my family, and occasionally I will share my own triumphs and mistakes to benefit them and their children.  I enjoy watching many of my students' successes in their pursuits of college education, their proud, nostalgic visits at BG after they graduate college, and their career successes. The students' and parents' appreciation, students' successes is what makes my work especially rewarding.

6. What is something unique about you?   I am just like everyone else, except that I have lived and studied on two different continents, and experienced the best of two worlds. I love to travel, and spend as much time as possible with my sons and their families.  We welcomed two grandchildren to this world this year.  Needless to say they stole my heart. Family traditions and spending holidays together are very important, and I make sure that my grandmother's and mother's recipes are put to use.

7.What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?  I have been a Multicultural Club sponsor for the last seven years.  The club became the extension of my work, and allows me to get to know my students better.  The goal of the club is to celebrate students' own culture, learn about the American culture and gain new experiences during the college field trips or attending and enjoying theater shows.
