Friday Focus:

District 214 parents and students can explore careers through free events
High School District 214 students and their parents are invited to an information-packed lineup of free events this fall focused on career exploration.

Hit, hit, hit? Not at Buffalo Grove -- at least in practice, that is
The Daily Herald, August 28, 2019
By now, with a summer of preseason football practices under his belt, Tommy Dierbach's neck would already ache. His back would hurt, too. "I got to the point last year that my back hurt so bad that I couldn't get up after making a play. I'd have to have my teammates help me up," said Dierbach, a junior linebacker at Buffalo Grove who was on the varsity last year as a sophomore. "This year, I feel fresh. "I've been playing football my whole life, and this is a really different way of doing things." Actually, Buffalo Grove coach Jeff Vlk might call it a completely radical way of doing things. At Buffalo Grove, football suddenly involves a lot less hitting. Almost none, in fact. At least in practice. Read Story

Football Nuggets Entering 2019
Journal & Topics, August 29, 2019
With the high school football season here, it’s good for fans to know all the trends coming in, to prepare for the 2019 season. Here’s a look at some interesting tidbits on the local football scene:  Buffalo Grove is 14-7 over the last two seasons after going a combined 13-41 from 2011-2016. The Bison also made the playoffs the last two years after missing the postseason each year from 2004 to 2016. Buffalo Grove made the playoffs three years in a row from 2001-03 and they hope to make the playoffs for a third straight year in 2019. Read Story

Pioneer Press 2019 football preview: Buffalo Grove Bison
Chicago Tribune, August 25, 2019
First-and-10: Youth is the theme for the Bison offense. Only two players return that started in the first week of last season. Quarterback Mark Antonetti is slated to lead the offense, while wide receivers Noah Smith and Ayden Anderson have already made an impression. Vlk said Antonetti has to play within himself instead of trying to replace last season’s starting quarterback, Connor Adams, the all-time leading passer in school history. Running back Max Oberman is a player with a high upside, Vlk said. “Our offensive line is pretty solid, but we don’t have a lot of starters back on offense,” he said. “We are pretty young this year. We had so much experience the last two years. Mark is ready to take over the reigns at quarterback. He learned a lot last year and is ready to lead the team. He took last year as a time to learn under Connor. We are pretty skilled at some positions but just young.”  Read Story

Journal & Topics, August 14, 2019
Billy Montemayor is moving up from assistant to head baseball coach at Buffalo Grove, the school announced Thursday, Aug. 1. “It is really exciting and I was happy to get the news,” Montemayor said after being hired. “I’m excited for the next season to begin. When I got into coaching, it was always something I dreamt of possibly achieving someday. I am excited for the new journey.” Montemayor is from Elk Grove Village and is an Elk Grove High School graduate. He played college baseball at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines for a season, before transferring to Parkland College, but he didn’t play at his second school.
