Friday Focus:
BGHS named as part of the National School Library Program of the Year!
We are proud to announce that the District 214 libraries have been named as National School Library Program of the Year by the American Association of School Libraries!  From the ALA website: "Established in 1963, the award recognizes school libraries as an unique and essential part of their learning community. NSLY honors school libraries exemplifying implementation of AASL's National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries."

This announcement comes after an extensive application process that included a site visit to three of the district schools--including Buffalo Grove.  During our site visit, the committee was impressed with--among other criteria--our facility, our support of literacy across subject as well as commitment to independent reading and getting books into students' hands.

Baseball: Buffalo Grove's home runs do in Hersey
The Daily Herald, April 24, 2019
There's this tendency for Sean Jacobs to want to prove something. He's the No. 9 hitter in Buffalo Grove's batting order after all, and some might assume that coaches hide their weaker hitters in that spot. "I love being in the nine-spot," Jacobs said. "People doubt you and you just prove them wrong." Jacobs proved all kinds of things on Wednesday when Buffalo Grove hosted Hersey in a Mid-Suburban East baseball game. For starters, he proved that he fit right in with Buffalo Grove's theme of the day of "hot bats and home runs." Read Story

High schoolers build tiny homes for disabled veterans
ABC 7 Eyewitness News, April 24, 2019
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three high schools in Township School District 214 are working together for a cause. By measuring, cutting and drilling, students at Buffalo Grove, Rolling Meadows and John Hersey High School are making a difference from thousands of miles away. "We're currently working with a program that builds tiny homes in Savannah Georgia, those homes will go to disabled veterans and the homeless population down there," technology and automotive teacher Sean Murrin said. The students will frame the walls for 20 tiny homes that will be shipped to the Veterans Village in May.  Watch Story Here

Girls water polo: Buffalo Grove tops Hersey to win MSL East
The Daily Herald, April 24, 2019
Buffalo Grove goalkeeper Shanelle Cadle was nervous most of the day preparing for a rematch with Hersey. The Bison girls water polo team needed to beat the Huskies by 2 goals to claim the Mid-Suburban East championship. Cadle, a senior, did her part by making 16 saves in Buffalo Grove's 5-3 win over Hersey at Prospect High School Wednesday night. The win puts Buffalo Grove (20-4, 9-1) in the Mid-Suburban championship game against Conant next Thursday. Read Story

Ethan Soifer serves up consistency for Buffalo Grove boys volleyball
Chicago Tribune, April 22, 2019
Much was expected of Ethan Soifer entering his senior volleyball season. The Buffalo Grove outside hitter was the lone returning all-conference player for the Bison, and his presence helped solidify a program that went 15-22 last season, yet won seven games in the Mid-Suburban East and finished second in the league standings. A recent surge has the Bison at 13-10 overall and 5-0 in the MSL East. Soifer supplies a consistent serve and has recorded 20 aces to go with a team-high 198 kills. His steady production and composure have sparked the whole group. Read Story

Staff Spotlight

1. What is your name? Kristen Prokup

2. What department have you/do you work in?  I have the privilege of supporting our Special Education programs as the Division Head.

3. How long have you been working at BG?   This is my fourth year at BGHS

4. Where did you go to high school?   I am a proud Fremd Viking!

5. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding?  I firmly believe that our paths in life don't cross by coincidence.  I learn something new from every student, staff member and family I have the opportunity to connect with.  It is inspiring to hear their stories, support them in overcoming any challenges they may face and encourage them to accomplish their dreams.  I went into teaching because I thought I had something to share or give back. As it turns out, I often feel I learn and grow more from my students, their families and staff than I give to them.  And for that I am incredibly grateful.

6. What is something unique about you?  I had the opportunity to live in Germany for 3 years after my sophomore year of college.  While working and completing college, I was lucky to be able to do quite a bit of traveling.  As a result, I fell more in love with meeting people from different walks of life, learning different cultures, and taking advantage of unique opportunities to experience new things.  What I have learned since then is that I get those same opportunities right in my hometown and in our school community.

7. What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?   Girls' gymnastics
