Arts Unlimited District 214 Photo Show

We are proud to share the 2021 Arts Unlimited District 214 Photo Show. Once again our students have shown us how the arts have been essential tools to help express their emotions and share their brave hopes and dreams during a school year like no other. This year's show was juried by Bali-based international photographer David Metcalf. He also recorded a 23 minute talk for our photography students, sharing stories and lessons from his own photography portfolio. The following talented BG art students are recognized for their participation in this year’s event: Ellis Chamorro, Khushi Gandhi, Ian Garcia, Devin Horvath, Kiersten Hung (Honorable Mention), Nicole Katunina, Tiffany Kesler, Ellen Lee (Honorable Mention), Grecia Vanessa Leyva (1st Place), Matthew Maradkel, Michael Mikolajczyk, Victoria Panasiuk, Alexander Safanov, Kristen Tenekejieva, and Maryam Yelda (3rd place). CLICK HERE to view the show. Additionally, the entire photo show can be viewed in the display cases at Forest View and will remain there over the summer.

The Bison Impact:

  • Congratulations to Gymnast Ben Valak, the Parallel Bars State Champion! Ben was also 3rd in State for All-Around!

  • Shout out to the first ever BGHS Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams! Both teams have been very competitive in the MSL East games. Highlights of the boys inaugural season so far include defeating Elk Grove 17-0, and an intense game against Rolling Meadows with multiple lead changes, a comeback to tie the game with 8 seconds left, and winning 9-8 in overtime. Highlights for the girls team was beginning the season undefeated until a recent loss to Hersey. Congrats to both teams and coaches!

  • Congratulations to the Class of 2021 Baseball players celebrating Senior Night this week. The Bison won on senior day, defeating Rolling Meadows 5-0. Senior Luc Rotondo was excellent on the mound going 7 innings and striking out 12. The Bison are back in action tonight against Schaumburg.

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? Michael Jorzak

What department have you/ do you work in? I work in the Campus Security area of BGHS.

How long have you been working at BG? I am about to complete my second year working here at BG, although I didn't get a full first year here (Thanks COVID).

Where did you go to high school? The greatest high school in the country, BGHS class of 2013

What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? I would have to say the interactions with students everyday is hands down the most rewarding. I think we all as staff felt the lack of spark and energy without the students in the building early on in the year. I always enjoyed the interaction with students, but I definitely found out how much I took it for granted when they were not here. We have a lot of talented students here at BGHS, and seeing them back makes the days so much better.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  I actually haven't read or listened to too many podcasts lately. My favorite thing to watch now is the buzzfeed unsolved and unsolved supernatural series on YouTube. Looking into unsolved cases and theories of what happened is just something that has always got my immediate attention. As for the supernatural part, I'm big into haunted places and ghosts... they're out there you just got to believe,

What is something unique about you? I am a huge White Sox, and baseball fan overall. I really want to travel to every stadium and have made it a goal of mine. I've hit only 3 out of 30 so far, so I've got a long way to go... but we'll get there! I'm also a pretty big history nerd. It was always my favorite class to take when I was here and I love watching movies and documentaries that have anything to do with history.

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor?  What activities at BG do you follow? I'm not currently a sponsor to any clubs but I got to give a shout out to the boys and girls in the gaming club. I'm a big gamer myself and loved walking through the staff lounge last year on Friday's seeing them get all set up.

With working the after school hours inside the building, I have really been paying attention to a lot of the boys/girls basketball and volleyball games. I see first hand by passing through their practices how hard they work and find myself really getting into the games.

Boys lacrosse: Buffalo Grove dumps Rolling Meadows in OT

Daily Herald, May 13, 2021

In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary's second definition of the word momentum it's labeled as 'strength or force gained by motion or by a series of events'. In the debut season of boys lacrosse for the Mid-Suburban East obtaining it may hold the key toward capturing the division crown as none of its members headed into Thursday night's schedule with more than one loss in division play. "There's a lot of parity in the MSL East," Buffalo Grove coach Ray Kincaid, Jr. said after his team's 9-8 overtime win at Rolling Meadows. "And it's going to make it fun. Again, these kids have been waiting a long time for this. We just found something." Read Story

Journal-Area Athletes Win 5 State Titles In Boys Gymnastics

Journal & Topics, May 20, 2021

Buffalo Grove’s Valak made some history, winning parallel bars with a 9.6 score. Valak is the second state champion in Buffalo Grove program history and the first state champion since Dewey Deal also won parallel bars in 1977. Valak is the sixth different medalist in program history and first since Daniel Gerovoy in 2016 (6th on parallel bars).
