Principal Wardle's Weekly Blog 08/26/22

Friday Focus:  PSAT Exam Wednesday, October 12

All  BGHS juniors will be given a PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/Nation Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) exam on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

This will allow BGHS to fully support all junior students in preparation for the state SAT exam administered in April. Students are given two options:

  1. The PSAT/NMSQT test (requires registration & payment)

OR

  1. The PSAT practice test (no registration needed; automatically given if student does not register for the PSAT/NMSQT).

Many juniors choose to take the PSAT/NMSQT. As explained in the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, this optional test has several purposes:

  • Entrance into the National Merit competition for Junior students. In order to become a National Merit finalist, students must have a record of consistent high academic performance in all grades 9-11.

  • Prediction of college entrance exam scores.

  • Measurement of critical reading, mathematics and writing skills important for success in many post-high school educational settings.

Registration for the PSAT/NMSQT exam is open from August 22 to September 9.  NO LATE REGISTRATION CAN BE ACCEPTED. Please click on this link to register: PSAT NMSQT Online Registration. The cost of the exam is $30 (students that are approved for free or reduced lunch may register online and will receive a reduced cost.)

Juniors who do not register for the NMSQT will automatically be given a free practice PSAT exam instead.  No registration is required for this free practice exam.

BGHS Comfort Closet

The Comfort Closet is a resource offered to struggling BG families who could benefit from access to FREE hygienic supplies. Over the past four years, we have collected donations (items and monetary) from the staff and community to keep the Closet well stocked. Since the COVID pandemic began, more students have been visiting the Closet to get items for themselves and their families. The students are amazed that this resource is available to them and many express how grateful they are to be part of a community that is so generous. It is heartwarming to see how big a difference this makes in the lives of these students. Students who need supplies can see their counselor, Ms. Katelyn Malartsik (in Social Studies) or Ms. Sindi Smith (in Math/Science) to "shop" whenever it is convenient for them.

Beginning Thursday, September 1, at Parent-Teacher conferences, there will be boxes near Door #1 (security vestibule) and Door # 6 (theater) where donated items can be placed. If you are out and about this weekend and can pick up a few items to contribute, it would be much appreciated.  We are particularly in need of the following full size items:

·       Deodorant

·       Face wash (this is a particularly hot commodity)

·       Shampoo & conditioner

·       Body wash

·       Toothpaste

·       Toothbrushes

·       Body lotion

·       Tampons and sanitary pads

·       Dental floss

·       Hair brushes

We also accept monetary donations and Target giftcards (we have a tax-exempt account there to replenish items). Checks can be made out to “BGHS”, simply write “COMFORT CLOSET” in the memo. Checks can be dropped off at our security desk at Door #1 or mailed in.

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? Vince Genualdi

What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? English and Fine Arts, and this is my first year at BG!

Where did you go to high school/ college? I'm an Elk Grove High School graduate. I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and recently earned my Master's in Educational Leadership from North Park University.

What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? The process. I love watching the growth and journey to mastery in music. It's incredible to witness young adults achieve something that they thought was impossible for them.

What’s a bucket list item for you? I hope to drive to the coast of Italy sometime.

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  My latest reads have been academic and professional--I'm a sucker for a good research paper or article. My current podcast jam is "Hip Hop Can Save America."

What activities or clubs do you coach/sponsor? I'm the Band Director here at BG. I'd like to introduce clubs and courses in audio engineering, music production, and songwriting.

What is something unique about you? I'm mildly obsessed with Neapolitan pizza--let's talk dough hydration.

Bison in the News

Scouting Week 1 Cook County football games

The Daily Herald, August 25, 2022

Outlook: Lyons qualified for the playoffs last year for the first time since 2017. They also return one of the top juniors in the state in defensive lineman Eddie Tuerk, who has 16 D-1 offers. Buffalo Grove is beginning its 50th year as a program and is coming off one of their best seasons in years. But graduation has hit the Bison hard losing 37 seniors. Still, they return speedy quarterback Michael Cervantes, who is always a threat when he has the ball in his hands. Anthony Palano also is back at wide receiver for Cervantes and junior Payton Diaz if the Bison opt to use Cervantes at running back. Read Story
