Friday Focus: NEW! Math/Science Tutoring Cove

Happy New Year and welcome back! Beginning Tuesday, January 17th, the Math and Science Division will offer tutoring services in the Math and Science Tutoring Cove (located in our resource area near the fish tanks) for students who need additional academic support. Students seeking assistance in these subjects will not report to the Learning Lab. Only math or science teachers can issue a pass for students to attend.  The pass will have the time to report, and students must be in attendance within 5-10 minutes of that time, or they will be turned away. Before leaving the session, students must complete the MS Tutoring Cove sign-out form for attendance and data purposes.

Please see the M/S Tutoring Cove Student Expectations detailed below. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Dr. Angel Johnson at 847-718-4131.

**FREE** Virtual SAT Test Prep Program

Register Today! Begins February 7th

To help prepare students for the upcoming State SAT exam, Buffalo Grove High School will be offering an after school virtual SAT Test Prep Program for Juniors beginning February 7, 2023. The program will run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm - 8:10 pm for three weeks. This school year, the fee will be waived for the SAT Test Prep after school program. We believe that participation in this test preparation course will enhance the SAT experience and scores by focusing on all three parts of the SAT (Reading, Mathematics, and Writing and Language). Students were already offered the opportunity to register for an in-school SAT test prep program during the school day, replacing their Independent Study or Study Hall. If you have already registered for the in-school session, it is not necessary to register for the evening program as these are similar in content.

The online registration will be open January 10 through January 24, 2023, or until class capacities are reached. Space is limited. Please register early! There are two options to register for the Test Prep Program:

  • Direct Link for BGHS: BGHS SAT Test Prep Registration Note: If you have not registered for a Community Education course in the past, you will need to create an account.

  • Community Education website at ce.d214.org, click the red ‘Register Now’ button. If you have not registered for a Community Education course in the past, you will need to create an account. Once you create your account, select Explore All Programs and look for Academic Test Prep and Buffalo Grove High School Test Prep for the SAT.

If you have any questions, please contact the Buffalo Grove Assessment Center at 847-718-4036.

Apprenticeship Opportunity for Current Juniors

Application Deadline Extended to January 31

District 214 offers a variety of youth apprenticeship programs, including registered apprenticeships, which meet standards defined by the United States Department of Labor and youth apprenticeships. Youth Apprenticeships are employer-driven, “learn while you earn” models that combine structured paid on-the-job training with job-related instruction in curricula that may lead to the attainment of industry-recognized skills standards and an industry credential. Instruction and technical training related to the apprenticeship is provided by the high school, technical schools, or community colleges; on-the-job training occurs at a worksite. The goal is to provide students with advanced skill sets that meet specific employer needs. Often, employers hire students who have been through their apprenticeship program full-time upon graduation and cover additional training and certification expenses. In partnership with local employers, apprenticeships are currently offered in the fields of:

Athletic Training Assistant

Automotive

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Construction and Trades

Graphic Arts

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)

Information Technology (Cybersecurity, IT Generalist and Help Desk)

Manufacturing

MultiMedia

Pharmacy Technician

Professional Cook

Veterinary Technician Assistant

Students interested in an apprenticeship must be committed to the program and work with their counselor to ensure all required coursework fits into the student’s four-year academic plan. Important to note is that all apprenticeships require that specific coursework be completed before the application. The application is open until January 31, 2023. Contact April Gregory in the College & Career Center at 847-718-4236 with any questions.
