Principal Wardle's Weekly Blog 09/10/2021

 Friday Focus:   Remembering 9/11

Today, as a school, we took time to remember and learn about the events of 9/11. Students and teachers from around the world joined to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 as part of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Anniversary in the Schools program. Participants learned about 9/11 through personal stories from 9/11 family members, first responders from the FDNY and PAPD, and a student on 9/11. NEW CLUB!

Staff Spotlight

What is your name? My name is Nasir Bryant.

What department do you teach in/ How long have you been teaching at BG? I teach in the English Language Arts/English Language Department, and this will be my first year here at BG!

Where did you go to high school? I went to high school at Downers Grove South High School for most of my high school experience, but moved to Plainfield during my junior year. I was one of the first graduating classes from Plainfield East High School.

What part of teaching do you find the most rewarding? What I find most rewarding about teaching is being someone that students can rely on. I didn’t always have an individual in my high school experience that I felt I could rely on, so being that “someone” for students always comes with much merit!

What new thing have you learned this year in teaching? Something new that I have learned (or was reminded of) about teaching this year is the importance of social and face-to-face interactions when learning. There is just so much more motivation and purpose when teaching face-to-face with students. Sometimes, you really don’t know what you’re missing until you no longer have it; I think that definitely speaks for most!

What are you currently reading, and/ or do you have a favorite author or podcast?  Currently, I am reading “When” by Daniel Pink & “Talking to Strangers” by Malcolm Gladwell. I have always been a big fan of Malcolm Gladwell’s books, but I have recently endeavoured into some of his podcasts, which are quite entertaining and informative.

What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? Starting in November, I will be one of the Assistant Coaches for Boys & Girls Wrestling!

What is something unique about you? Something unique about me is that I have a friend living on every continent in the world - except Antarctica. We regularly keep in touch and message or video chat one another!

Buffalo Grove High School Alum Makes Comeback out of Retirement to the Olympics

The Daily Herald, September 7, 2021

Making it to the Olympics is a lifelong dream for many athletes, but it was one goal rhythmic gymnast Liza Merenzon did not have in mind. "I was terrible. I never had natural talent in gymnastics. A lot of my accomplishments from these last few years were from hard work and dedication," said Merenzon. The Buffalo Grove High School 2017 graduate was part of the USA's Group Rhythmic Gymnastics team that placed 11th in the Tokyo Olympics. It's been a 17-year journey with the sport, that also included the difficult decision to retire at a point. Read Story

Buffalo Grove holds off Conant's late rally

The Daily Herald, September 3, 2021

After both teams got wins to open the season last weekend, something had to give when Buffalo Grove visited Conant in a Mid-Suburban League crossover football game Friday night. And while the Bison did have to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Cougars, they were able to capture a 41-35 win. Read Story

Parent Involvement

BGHS parents have the opportunity to join several groups that support our students. The Bison Boosters support the athletics program, the Buffalo Grove Instrumental Association and Friends of the Orchestra support the band and orchestra programs, the Buffalo Grove Choral Guild supports our choir programs, and the Buffalo Grove Parent Association supports the school's educational programs. Each group has its own set of policies, membership responsibilities, and meeting schedules. Please consider supporting these parent groups. Most donations will flow through the District 214Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, and you will be sent an automatic receipt and thank-you. Your support is significant, and provides tangible opportunities for our students in athletics, the fine and performing arts and academics.
