Principal Wardle's Weekly Blog

Friday Focus

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.  In that tumultuous time in our history, a great leader stood strong in his beliefs and vision for a united America.  I have a picture of Abe Lincoln in my office, reminding me of the importance of standing firm in my vision and beliefs for Buffalo Grove High School.  One of my favorite quotes of President Lincoln, as he addressed congress in 1862, rings true to me today:

“Still the question recurs, ‘Can we do better?’ The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”

This quote challenges me to think of the future of our students and where that demands we change as an educational institution.  I love this challenge, and look forward to leading our building down the road of thinking and acting anew in the years ahead.

This idea rings true for me not only at Buffalo Grove, but in my personal life also.  I’m sure it does for you as well.  I hope we never stop asking, “Can we do better?”
